UPC Code Celebrates 35 Years 06/03/09
Packaging Digest reports that the Universal Product Code (UPC) bar code will soon celebrate its 35th birthday. One of the world's best-known symbols, the UPC code's 59 machine-readable black and white bars and 12 human-readable digits convey a product's identity and manufacturer. Originally developed to help supermarkets speed up the checkout process, the first live use of a UPC took place in a Marsh Supermarkets store in Troy, Ohio, on June 26, 1974, when a cashier scanned a pack of Wrigley's gum.
Edible Postcard Wins Award 07/01/09
Advertising Age reports that Nestle's Kit Kat candy bar found a new distribution channel in Japan's competitive retail environment, earning its agency, JWT Japan, the Media Grand Prix award at the 56th Cannes Lions International Advertising Festival. "JWT was struck by the Japanese translation of Kit Kat -- Kitto Katso means 'surely win' -- and the tradition of sending students good luck wishes before they take tough higher-education entrance exams. So Nestle partnered with Japan's postal service to create 'Kit Kat Mail,' a postcard-like product sold only at the post office that could be mailed to students as an edible good-luck charm." It was the first time Japanese postal authorities had partnered with a private company, "creating a new, competition-free retail channel."

USPS Income Declines 07/08/09
BtoB Online reports that the U.S. Postal Service recorded a net loss of $677 million for May, bringing to $3.4 billion its total losses in the current fiscal year, with a projection of total annual losses of $6 billion for the fiscal year ending Sept. 30. USPS said it processed 2.8 billion fewer pieces of mail in May, compared with the same month in 2008. To help stem the tide of losses, the USPS launched a summer sale on postage for any increase in bulk Standard Mail volume, a form of seasonal pricing that the direct marketing industry has long requested. Mailers are being offered discounts of 20-30 percent through Sept. 15 for volume in excess of their past mailings.

The first piece of news that you should know about is that Graph Expo 2010 has a Virtual Preview this year that provides terrific information through October 2nd, one day before the doors open in Chicago, IL. (go to Virtual Preview)
As in previous editions, the Seminars are rich in content and fully geared. 20 tracks and about 50 seminars during the show will provide you with all that knowledge that walking the show floor does not provide. There are a few sessions in Spanish, and XPLOR Document University has its track as well(take a look at the Seminars Schedule)
The Executive Outlook Conference the day before the show promises to present the latest business trends and all the information necessary to make the best out of Graph Expo.
Digital technologies have been overtaking trade show floor, and there are good reasons for that shift. Graph Expo 2009 had identified companies that made significant improvements in computer-centric manufacturing, information technology competency and effective use of MIS, management information systems.
This year we expect variable data printing to have reached even higher levels. Key players in the digital printing industry, Xerox, HP, Konica-Minolta are all presenting new digital printing platforms this year. Our believe is that all of these new printers will represent a technological shift from the past, forcing printing companies to re-align with the newer technologies.
Here are some of the announcements for the show
- Presstek announced their Six-Minute Makeready press. Model 75DI (Offset Press)
- Pressero announced the release of a new Web to Print solution
- Steinemann Technology will present new high-end finishing with UV varnishes and films
- Mimaki USA now offers a new silver ink in its ES3 ink portfolio of eco-solvent inks for JV33 and CJV30 series of large format printers. Shipment of the new silver ink is expected to commence in October 2010.
- Bitstream announced the release of Pageflex 7.6 for their variable data and cross-platform publishing. The platform includes Pageflex storefront.

Si Ud. forma parte de la economia digital, no debe dejar de participar de este show.
